Description

This open access book presents a broad portfolio of positron emission tomography examples coupled with computed tomography (PET/CT) studies in a variety of cardiac conditions to justify the application of this technology in a variety of clinical conditions. Cardiovascular disease is a major contributor to premature morbidity and mortality worldwide. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are the countries most affected by cardiovascular disease (CVD), with more than 75% of CVD deaths occurring in these countries. Therefore, target 3.4 of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda aims to reduce premature death rates due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 30%, including CVD, by 2030. Among CVD, ischemic diseases Heart disease (IHD) plays an important role and, according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), it was responsible for 15.96% of global deaths in 2017. Between 2000 and 2017, the number of IHD deaths worldwide increased by 0.26% per year. Several imaging tools help non-invasively diagnose, risk stratify, and guide management of heart disease. These techniques include nuclear cardiology techniques, using SPECT (single photon Emission Computed Tomography) or PET/CT. Although myocardial imaging with SPECT has been fully accepted by the cardiology community and is widely available worldwide, the introduction of PET/CT is still slow, not only because of its higher cost, but also because of the limited availability of PET/VCT scanners, which are mostly used for oncological applications. This book is an invaluable tool for nuclear medicine physicians, cardiologists and radiologists.
