Title
Protection and Management of Species, Habitats, Ecosystems and Landscapes
Subject
Animals
Description
Earth has entered a new geological epoch, the Anthropocene, characterized by a human-inducedtemperature increase, thus placing immense impacts upon natural, atmospheric and hydrologicalprocesses, and possibly leading to a substantial global biodiversity decrease and ecosystemfunction degradation. The environmental preservation and sustainable use of natural resources areglobal goals that must be achieved in the coming decades. The capitalization of the internationalpartnerships to promote the biodiversity strategy and the European green deal is creating a decisivepolitical framework to tackle the challenges ahead. Understanding the natural environment andsocio-ecological interactions is the main objective of strategic planning, management practice andpolicy decisions in the sustainable development era. However, the ever-growing earth population andthe subsequent overexploitation of natural resources (species, habitats, ecosystems, and landscapes)to provide space for human activities is leading to a bottleneck for sustainable environmentalmanagement and human well-being. Simultaneously, climate change impact and future climateprojections provoke urgent action when it comes to conservation and restoration practices. This leadsto targeting the mitigation of pressures and threats, in order to protect and appropriately managespecies, habitats, ecosystems and landscapes, alongside the maintenance of provided ecosystemservices. By this, it is evident that multidisciplinary scientific, as well as applied approaches areneeded to understand the rapidly changing environmental, cultural, social and economic conditionsand tackle contemporary environmental and social challenges. This publication tries to contributein this “battle” and present modern aspects on handling sensitive environmental resources, whilesimultaneously pinpointing the importance of a sustainable human–nature interaction, whichguarantees environmental health as well as societal well-being.
