onthegeneralhealthoftheaf fectedpatientsbyincr easingtheirriskofseveralwidespr eaddiseases,
suchasdiabetes,cor onaryheartdisease,peripheralarterialdisease,ischemicstr oke,andsmallvessel
diseaseinthebrain.Atleastfourbasicpathogenicmechanismsinvolvingoralinflammationin
thepathogenesisofwidespr eaddiseaseshavebeenpr oposed:(1)lowlevelbacter emiabywhich
oralbacteriaenterthebloodstr eamandinvadethebody;(2)systemicinflammationinducedby
inflammatorymediatorsr eleasedfr omthesitesoftheoralinflammationintothebloodstr eam;
(3)autoimmunitytohostpr oteinscausedbythehostimmuner esponsetospecificcomponentsof
oralpathogens;and(4)pathogenicef fectsr esultingfr omspecificbacterialtoxinspr oducedbyoral
pathogenicbacteria.
ThisSpecialIssuefocusesonseveralaspectsoftheinteractionbetweenoralinfectionsand
widespr eadsystemicdiseases.W ecollectedcontributionsintheformofr eviewsandoriginalpapers
writtenbyhighlyr eputedexpertsinthisfield.
